Yeah, those willowaws were hard core nasty storms. Very, very tough place to be stationed during the war. Weather aside, trying to keep everyone’s morale up as the war moved on elsewhere and the Aleutians became increasingly a forgotten theater was a huge challenge.
Yes, the accident rate due to the weather and the topography of the Aleutians caused far more losses than the actual fighting. Very dangerous place to operate in, both for the ground forces and the air crews on both sides.

My father was station in the Aleutians during that time. He spent time on Attu. His descriptions of winter make this look like a summer picture. 😉

Looks like a lovely place for a holiday, although having said that, nowadays, I believe that Attu is a major attraction for birdwatchers.
What kind of birds can survive on Attu? I hope they have good coats!
All I can say about those poor nurses…is they gotta be freezing! Isn’t it correct that mishaps caused a high casualty rate up there?
